In 1983, early steps to establish the Department of Social Sciences were taken by establishment of Social Research field in undergraduate level. Afterwards, in 2001, the Department has had its first round students in the field of Cooperation and Social Welfare in undergraduate level.

Since 1996, the Department of Social Sciences has established its master's program in Social Science Research. Sociology was the next master program, which stablished in the department in 2000. Subsequently in order to fill organizational-level need for specialized human resources, Economic and Development Sociology at Ph.D. level has been emerged in 2009. Subsequently, second doctoral program in the field of Sociology of Social Problems in Iran was established in 2021.

The department currently has 10 full-time faculty members.

The Department of Social Sciences of University of Tabriz, engaging actively in education and research for four decades, has been able to attest to its position as one of renowned higher education entities in the field of social sciences in Iran and in conducting immense qualitative as well as quantitative research.

Missions and Ambitions                                                                                                                                                                   

The Department of Social Sciences has primarily focused on scientific and systematic study of society and humans as social beings as its main academic objective. Since its foundation, the Department of Social Sciences has had the following missions and ambitions:

  • Creating knowledge in various fields of the Social Sciences;
  • Training and educating students to have creative knowledge and skill for social research and analysis;
  • Conducting studies and researches on social issues and share their results with responsible and relevant state and civil society organizations, research institutions, as well as interested individuals through joint collaborations, journals, seminars, and conferences.
  • Internationalization of its scientific and academic affairs is among the most important strategies taken by the Department. The Department attempts to expand its academic relations in the international arena with renowned academic institutions. Accordingly, the Department tries to create joint interactional academic relationship with abroad educational and research institutes and centers. The Department also avails itself of virtual space and electronic teaching as a major strategy to make headway.

Admission Requirements                                                                                                                                                                  

General conditions for non-Iranian students’ admission:

  • Having certificate of completion of high school in foreign schools to apply for undergraduate studies in sociology or related fields.
  • Having a Bachelor's degree to apply for a Master's program.
  • Having a Master's degree to apply for the specialized Doctoral programs.

Having a minimum grade point average of 14 out of 20 or the equivalent of 70 out of 100 to enter undergraduate (BA), graduate (MA), and PhD or doctoral programs (for all fields of study)

Graduation Requirements                                                                                                                                                                 

To have a Bachelor’s degree, students have to complete 240 ECTS from joint required and elective courses with at least getting 10 out of 20 in each course, with GPA of 12. Educational and administrative details around this requirement are available under "Program Structure".

To have a Master’s degree, students have to complete 90 ECTS from joint required and elective courses with at least getting 12 out of 20 in each course, with GPA of 14 out of 20. MA graduates have to write a thesis in a given and related subject area and successfully defend from her/his thesis in front of the leading committee and an inter-department examiner. To have a PhD, students have to complete some joint required and elective courses (according to the Department Council’s recommendation and the type of PhD program entered) with at least getting 14 out of 20 in each course, with GPA of 16 out of 20. PhD students are required to write their dissertations around a related subject matter and successfully defend from their dissertation in front of the leading committee and up to 3 inter and intra-institutional examiners. Program Profile                                                                                                                                                                                   

Our undergraduate program is based on successfully completing all determined courses according to the defined length of time and manner. The courses of the education program are grouped into four sets, as following: (1) General courses within the university, which all students have to complete them, (2) Basic courses, which provide students with required elementary knowledge to go through specialized courses. (3) Specialized courses, which are program-special courses, mostly related to core knowledge, skills, and information that program encompasses (4) and, Elective courses, which are related to various subject area included in the program.  

Students are to successfully complete around 200 ECTS of the department`s compulsory courses (%88.5) and around 35 ECTS of the department`s elective courses (%11.5) in various BA programs (1 ECTS= 25 hours). Students that complete 234 ECTS in total from the determined joint general, basic, specialized, and elective courses, have the right to graduate. Some of the specialized courses of the program have prerequisites. Courses that are sequels are numbered as 1 and 2 following one another in sequential semesters. The program`s first and second years provides students with basic information about the field while courses of the third and fourth years mostly focus on supporting students in gaining information, skills, and competence related to the special topics they would like to proceed in the program.

  • Center of Excellence in Health Sociology 

The Center of Excellence in Health Sociology approved by Ministry of Science, Research and Technology in 2019 and started its scientific activities officially from the same time.

 Health as a one of the important indicators of the development of contemporary societies is very vital and important. The sociology of health, alternatively the sociology of health and wellness (or simply health sociology), examines the interaction between society and health at various dimensions and levels of analysis.

We hope that our Center as the first specialized center in the field in Iran, pave the way for other national researchers in the future.

  • Institute of Social Research

The Institute of Social Studies was founded in 20 February 1966, aiming to inspect social issues and to support researchers in Urban, Rural, Nomadic, Political, Social Psychology, Anthropology, and Demography fields.                                                                                                                                    

At the beginning, it was dependent to Faculty of Literature and Humanities, University of Tabriz, and until the Iran's 1979 revolution, has published 36 Books. Currently In terms of organizational chart the Institute is dependent to Faculty of Law and Social Sciences and located at the first floor of the faculty building.                                                                                                   

The Institute also performs research projects, holds conferences & seminars, and publishes books; journals and sponsors graduate students’ thesis projects. The Institute has a number of academic research collaborations with organizations and is ready to cooperate with other organizations in social research areas at national and international levels.

Journal of Economic Sociology and Development publishes Applied and basic researches in subject area of economic sociology and development. The purpose pursued in publishing this journal is to introduce recent research and theoretic findings of scholars and researchers in the sphere of Economics, Sociology, and Social Science generally. Within the professional framework of the journal, it welcomes scholars of other foreign countries to publish articles and scientific works in this journal.

Library                                                                                                                                                                                                  

To facilitate the access of professors, students and researchers to various scientific resources, specialized library in Social Sciences was inaugurated in 2002 with various books (Persian, English). The library consists of reading room and book section. It holds over 4194 books, mostly in Persian and English languages.
