History

Department of History (joint with Geography) was established in 1947 by having its first round students at the BA Level, and after separating from the Geography in 1958, was started its work independently. The Department initiated its MA program in 1991 and the PhD program in 1996. 

Nowadays, the field of History, as a main branch of Humanities and Social Sciences, has been mixed with many fields of scientific inquiry. The history researcher is involved with a wide range of subjects. He/she learns the process of human historic evolution, which contribute to understanding of self at individual, social, and national scales. Studying the history, equips the students with knowledge and skills to deal properly with an ever changing world and society. In addition, as the phrase goes: "The past enlightens our future" or the notion that "ignorant of its past is doomed to repeat it", aknowledges the importance and significance of the knowledge and practice of history.

At the present (2018), the Department of History, offers one BA, three MA, and one PhD level programs. These programs are held by 9 full time faculty members, who bring to their classrooms a love for their specific areas of history and an enthusiasm for classroom teaching. Their individual teaching styles provide students with a wide variety of learning experiences. The Department encourages postgraduate students to tailor their programs to their individual interests and career goals, thus taking advantage of the flexible courses of study built into both undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
 

History majors have gone on to careers in many fields, including education, business, communications, and the government. As, known, "History illuminates the human condition" and it is the memory of human experience. Therefore, the Department of History seeks to provide its students with an understanding of the significant institutions, events, trends, and individuals that have shaped that experience of history, thereby helping them develop a better understanding of ancient and contemporary cultures and human conditions.

Students majoring in history will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the development of human society and culture (particularly, the Persian history) through the study of the past, as well as the world history, specifically the history of Europe (Renaissance to the present time). To this end, the students will identify and describe the major individuals, groups, institutions, ideas, and events that have shaped political, social, and economic developments over time; identify and describe major historical eras or periods that have led to the present; and identify and describe the causes and consequences of large scale societal phenomena. In addition, the History graduate will apply the procedures used by historians to find and document sources, collect evidences and draw conclusions in completing original research.
